Matilda on Broadway

Hey There Love Bug,

matilda playbill

Earlier this month I was fortunate enough to be able to check out one of my favorite childhood films come to life on the stage.  Matilda the Musical brought back so many memories of the 90s when I wore my big slouch socks, rocked my *NSYNC shirt, and watched Full House and Saved by the Bell until I remembered every single line from every single episode (sigh…those were the days).  Anyways, Matilda has always been one of my favorite films as a kid.  I don’t know if it’s the fact that I was so insanely jealous that she was so brave and smart, or that I looked up to her in some way, but it was definitely in my VCR 24/7.  The musical was wonderful and while I was skeptical about taking this classic film and turning it into something new, I was pleasantly surprised after checking out the show.  Here are five reasons why you’ll love Matilda on Broadway!

5. The Storyline

One thing about sequels or remakes that drives me nuts is when they change the storyline.  I understand that when it is presented in a different format such as a broadway show or for a more modern audience, it is best to change some parts of the classic original.  Matilda the Musical really stuck to the original film storyline, except for one aspect; Matilda’s super powers.  While this was touched upon, they focused more on the relationships between the characters.  There were also a few parts that weren’t included in the play such as the scene where Matilda searches the home for ‘Lissy doll’.  I was pleasantly surprised to see some of my favorite scenes from the film recreated on the stage like tea time with Miss Honey, The chalkboard scene with Magnus (towards the end of the film), and my favorite, Amanda being thrown over the fence by Ms. Trunchbull.  There are also a few new concepts that weren’t in the film such as Matilda spending time with the librarian with her storytelling.  While most of it was true to the film, the added parts were delightful and refreshing.

4. The Humor

There wasn’t a minute that went by that I wasn’t laughing!  This play is cleverly written and each character brings their own sass and comedic influence to the story.  I absolutely loved Matilda’s parents, as they were just as silly and crazy as the film.  Laughing is the best, so I was really happy that I was in stitches the whole time!

3. The Music

There were a lot of great songs in this show!  I enjoyed listening to the tunes from various perspectives of each character.  I felt it really let the audience understand their feelings on a more personal level.

2. The Kids

OK, who doesn’t love little kids?!  I know that sounds a little biased (since I am an elementary school teacher), but seriously, these little actors and actresses were incredibly talented!  I was blown away at how poised and skilled these young boys and girls were in their roles!  Each and every one of them could easily win an award for their performance!  The fact that they were absolutely adorable helped too.  😉

1. Ms. Trunchbull

There is something about Ms. Trunchbull that fascinates me.  Do I want to be her?  No… but her fierceness has always intrigued me.  Let’s face it, you have to have some pretty good talented to portray such a character.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that the role of Ms. Trunchbull is played by a male actor.  This twist is absolutely brilliant, because the gentleman who played Ms. Trunchbull completely stole the show!  He nailed every fiber of her being and made the crowd bend over laughing he entire time.  I absolutely loved this character in the show and I know you will too!

As you make your way around the course, you’ll be doused in various color powders that will bring a smile to your face the entire race.  By the end of the course, you’ll wear your medal wth pride as you show off the various colors you’ve been sprinkled with from head to toe!

This years Color Run included more magic than ever!  Not only were there several color stations throughout the course, but there is a new foam zone with even MORE color!  Yes, you read that right, colorful foam!   Not only that, this years mascot is a UNICORN (Insert happy dance here)!!!  I live for all things fictional so this was especially exciting for me since I love unicorns!

Here are some tips for your next Color Run!

1. The more white you wear, the better!  We picked up our Color Run shirts (included in your registration) along with our bibs and some other goodies at pre-registration booths at Kohls.  The shirts given to runners are white, so we went ahead and wore them so make sure we could show off our color along the race!  Don’t be shy with accessories either!  We loved wearing our unicorn headbands to show off our love for them along the race course!  Tutus and other fun gear are also seen frequently on runners!

2. Running with a team is so much more fun than running alone!  Not to mention, you’ll knock off a few bucks for your registration when you register with a team!

3. The Color Run is for everyone of all ages!  Little ones and seniors can also be part of this magical race!

4.  Stop and enjoy the stations!  This is an untimed race!  There is no need to hurry through it!  You can enjoy getting spritzed with colored powder and check out some of the fun activities they offer along the way!

5. I know what you’re thinking…..What kind of a mess am I in for when my whole family is covered in color?  While the color can be messy, there are blowers at the end of the race to remove excess color from your body.  I also made sure to lay a towel down on my drivers seat before the race even began to keep my car as clean as possible.  In addition, I used running shoes that weren’t new to make sure that they wouldn’t get ruined with color.  After washing my sneakers and clothes, the color came off and they looked great!  None of the color is permanent so don’t worry about it permanently staining your clothes.  I was able to get all of the color right off with just warm water and soap!

6.  Be sure to check out the after party!  While the DJ rocks out with the crowd, more color is thrown at runners partying with him.  In addition, there are several vendors handing out snacks and samples!
