Finding Neverland on Broadway

Hey There Love Bug!

Last week I had the privilege of checking out Finding Neverland on their North American Tour.  To say that this show was beautiful, is a total understatement!  I was truly blown away at this production of how the classic tale of Peter Pan all began.  Here are the top 5 reasons why you’ll love Finding Neverland!

5. The Era

I’m a sucker for all things vintage.  Finding Neverland goes back to the late 1800s/early 1900s in London, England.  It includes verbiage and portrays life through various concepts throughout the entire play.  It’s truly refreshing in the sense that many of the things portrayed in the play aren’t around much anymore.  The interaction between characters is also ‘vintage’ which correlates with the actual story of Peter Pan.

4. The Magic

There are several parts in this play that offer magical moments.  Whether its Peter Pan flying in the sky while the sparkle blows all over the stage (which literally made me shed tears because of how beautiful it was) to the magic bounced off from actor to actor, this play has lots of special magical moments that will make your jaw drop.

3. The Music

The music in this play is phenomenal.  I was blown away with the talent and voices of the main actors, especially the kids!  It was just as magical as the music in the original Peter Pan film.  I definitely felt the each of the characters emotions through their vocal performance.

2. The Costumes

Who doesn’t love a good vintage wardrobe?  The costumes worn by the actors were tailored and worn so beautifully, I felt I had traveled back in time.  This is what made the play truly authentic to the time era.  From the set up of the scenery to the wardrobe of each character, I was super impressed with the portrayal of it all.

1. The Mood

I love stories that make my emotions change.  This play was no exception.  You will smile, laugh, cry, feel happy, feel sad, feel upset etc. There are also many comical moments infused in several parts of the play which made the audience laugh frequently too.  I also felt a strong connection with love and family and the importance of the roles of each of our loved ones.  It was truly a beautiful story that is relatable in so many ways, but ultimately, it teaches us to never lose hope on our dreams.

Matilda on Broadway

Hey There Love Bug,

matilda playbill

Earlier this month I was fortunate enough to be able to check out one of my favorite childhood films come to life on the stage.  Matilda the Musical brought back so many memories of the 90s when I wore my big slouch socks, rocked my *NSYNC shirt, and watched Full House and Saved by the Bell until I remembered every single line from every single episode (sigh…those were the days).  Anyways, Matilda has always been one of my favorite films as a kid.  I don’t know if it’s the fact that I was so insanely jealous that she was so brave and smart, or that I looked up to her in some way, but it was definitely in my VCR 24/7.  The musical was wonderful and while I was skeptical about taking this classic film and turning it into something new, I was pleasantly surprised after checking out the show.  Here are five reasons why you’ll love Matilda on Broadway!

5. The Storyline

One thing about sequels or remakes that drives me nuts is when they change the storyline.  I understand that when it is presented in a different format such as a broadway show or for a more modern audience, it is best to change some parts of the classic original.  Matilda the Musical really stuck to the original film storyline, except for one aspect; Matilda’s super powers.  While this was touched upon, they focused more on the relationships between the characters.  There were also a few parts that weren’t included in the play such as the scene where Matilda searches the home for ‘Lissy doll’.  I was pleasantly surprised to see some of my favorite scenes from the film recreated on the stage like tea time with Miss Honey, The chalkboard scene with Magnus (towards the end of the film), and my favorite, Amanda being thrown over the fence by Ms. Trunchbull.  There are also a few new concepts that weren’t in the film such as Matilda spending time with the librarian with her storytelling.  While most of it was true to the film, the added parts were delightful and refreshing.

4. The Humor

There wasn’t a minute that went by that I wasn’t laughing!  This play is cleverly written and each character brings their own sass and comedic influence to the story.  I absolutely loved Matilda’s parents, as they were just as silly and crazy as the film.  Laughing is the best, so I was really happy that I was in stitches the whole time!

3. The Music

There were a lot of great songs in this show!  I enjoyed listening to the tunes from various perspectives of each character.  I felt it really let the audience understand their feelings on a more personal level.

2. The Kids

OK, who doesn’t love little kids?!  I know that sounds a little biased (since I am an elementary school teacher), but seriously, these little actors and actresses were incredibly talented!  I was blown away at how poised and skilled these young boys and girls were in their roles!  Each and every one of them could easily win an award for their performance!  The fact that they were absolutely adorable helped too.  😉

1. Ms. Trunchbull

There is something about Ms. Trunchbull that fascinates me.  Do I want to be her?  No… but her fierceness has always intrigued me.  Let’s face it, you have to have some pretty good talented to portray such a character.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that the role of Ms. Trunchbull is played by a male actor.  This twist is absolutely brilliant, because the gentleman who played Ms. Trunchbull completely stole the show!  He nailed every fiber of her being and made the crowd bend over laughing he entire time.  I absolutely loved this character in the show and I know you will too!

Be sure to check the tour schedule for Matilda the Musical when it comes to a city near you!
