Hey There Love Bug!

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of checking out Something Rotten on Broadway.  The national tour stopped by sunny Ft. Lauderdale, and I have to say, I was super excited to see this show because it’s one I haven’t actually seen yet (shocking, I know).  Here are 5 reasons why you need to check out Something Rotten when it comes to your hometown!

5. The Plot

Something Rotten tells the story of two brothers, Nick and Nigel Bottom, that are struggling to develop a successful play.  The struggle is mostly due to the success of William Shakespeare’s shows and poetry that has taken over the town.  Nick decides to meet with a local soothsayer who informs Nick that the future will entail shows where singing, dancing, and acting will occur at the same time which will be called a musical.  Nick uses this information to  convince his brother to write the most successful musical ever.  I love that this plot is based during the renaissance era, which is something very different from any other play.  I also love that it incorporates Shakespeare, and being a teacher that loves history, it was nice to see the way this was played out on stage.

4. The Acting

This  10 time nominated play had some of the best acting I have ever seen.  The cast did such an exceptional job at drawing the audience in with their performance that I truly felt I was put in a time machine and taken back to the 1600s.

3. The Costumes

If you’re going to perform a play from the 1600s, you’ll need to look the part.  I was blown away at the beauty, intricacy, and colors of the costumes from the dancers to the main roles.  I also love how the colors for Shakespeares ‘crew’ were darker tones and the villagers were more colorful.  It gave Shakespeare a menacing look which was awesome!  The men in tights and the women with their long dresses were exquisite for the plot of the play.

2. The Humor

The best and most common reason as to why guests love this play is because of the humor it has.  I have never sat in a theater and heard more laughter than I ever have with this play.  They had so many clever lines and witty jokes that had the audience in a roar.  I love how they used similar phrases from today’s lingo but altered them to make sure they correlate with the way words were used back then.  I will say, most of the humor was appropriate for adults, so I’m not sure if this is a great play for little ones.

1. The Puns

Going along with the humor portion of this review, there were a lot of puns used in this play that made it that much more funny.   I especially loved how they used notorious lines from a plethora of broadway plays in the show.  It was truly hilarious and well worth it!
