Bandstand on Broadway

Hey There Love Bug,

bandstand

Last month I had the privilege of being able to check out Bandstand on Broadway in the heart of NYC.  I have had my eye on this show for a while because I am such a fan of the 1940s era, and not to mention, our amazing veterans to whom this show is dedicated to.  Unfortunately, Bandstand is performing its last show on September 17th, so this is the chance for you to check it out before its too late!  Here are 5 reasons why you’ll love Bandstand too!

5. The Storyline

Bandstand tells the story of a widowed wife of a WWII soldier and a group of veterans who have returned home from the war.  Suffering from PTSD and trying to fit back in their old lives prior to the war, they form a band, but not just any band, a band of 100% veterans.  They call themselves the Donny Nova Band, and they set out to compete in a national radio contest in NYC.  The struggles along the way are not easy, but their fight and determination to prove themselves is insatiable.  It is beyond inspiring and gives the audience a sense of empathy for what our soldiers did, and still do, for our country. Get ready for your heartstrings to be pulled!   There is no other show out there with this much of a relatable storyline for Americans!

4. The Music

While most broadway shows have unbelievable music, there is nothing quite like this one.  The most fascinating thing about the music in this show is that each of the actors on the stage have their own instruments and play them right on the stage for you to enjoy, which is very different from your standard orchestra at the theater.  Each actor in the ‘band’ is not only part of the play, but they are part of the ‘orchestra’ too!  Talk about talent!

3. The Talent

Speaking of talent, I was so blown away that this show wasn’t nominated for a Tony this year.  While each of the actors were incredible, Laura Osnes definitely steals the show as the leading lady of the band.  Her Tony winning voice and stage presence is infectious and beautiful to witness.  The goosebumps came out of my arms all night!  I also loved how humble she was when I met her at the stage door, too!  You’ll be blown away with the talent from every single actor on this stage.

2. The Theatre

Bandstand is currently playing at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.  As soon as I walked in there, I felt the intimacy between the audience and the stage because it isn’t a large theater, as most of them are.  I love how there is no bad seat in the house and the closeness felt with the audience gives for a more special experience.

1. The “Vintageness”

If you know me well, you know I love all things vintage.  The 1940s are one of the most classiest eras, so I was excited to see how this show would bring it back.  Not only were the costumes exquisite, but the hair, make-up, music, and set made me feel like I had traveled back in time.  I love how they paid such attention to detail with all of the props too.
